The first premier of the original MINI was in 1959, in response to a very unusual set of circumstances during the 1956 Suez Crisis with Egypt. At that time, Leonard Lord of the Morris Company asked his designer, Alec Issigonis, to create a vehicle that would be more efficient for drivers. The result was the "Mark I".
